Dear Friends, Community Members, and Supporters,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Commission of Florida, Inc., we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your interest and engagement with our organization’s website. Your support is essential to our mission as we continue to honor the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and strive to advance his vision of justice, equality, and unity in Gainesville, Alachua County, and beyond.

Historical Overview

Founded in 1984, the Commission has dedicated over four decades to upholding the principles and dreams championed by Dr. King. Inspired by his commitment to nonviolence, community service, and civil rights, our mission is to foster greater understanding, respect, and opportunity for all. We work diligently to promote social progress and ensure Dr. King’s message remains a guiding light for future generations.

Upcoming 42nd Anniversary Celebration

We are honored to announce the 42nd Year Anniversary King Celebration, taking place from January 9-19, 2026. This year’s theme, “Steadfast, Unmovable Against All Odds,” reflects our unwavering dedication to overcoming challenges and advancing Dr. King’s ideals, no matter what the obstacles. The highlight of the celebration will be the 42nd Annual Hall of Fame GALA, held at the University of Florida Hilton Hotel, where we will gather to recognize exemplary leaders and reflect on our shared progress.

Major Achievements

  • Establishment of the MLK Memorial Gardens: A living tribute honoring Dr. King and local civil rights pioneers and high school keepers of the dream, offering a place for reflection and remembrance.
  • Hall of Fame: Celebrating individuals who have made outstanding contributions to justice, equality, and community empowerment.
  • Scholarship Awards: Since our founding, we have proudly awarded scholarships to deserving youth, empowering countless students to pursue higher education and leadership. To date, we have provided over $550,000 in scholarships that have made a significant impact on recipients and their families.

Commitment to Justice and Equality

Our ongoing work is rooted in advocacy for civil rights, social justice, and educational equity. We recognize and uplift the efforts of youth reformers and community leaders, encouraging the next generation to carry forward the torch of positive change. The Commission remains steadfast in our resolve to build a society where justice and equality prevail.

We are deeply grateful to our community partners, sponsors, local officials, and the many organizations and individuals whose steadfast support has made our journey possible. Your dedication has enabled the Commission to thrive and continue making a meaningful difference.

We warmly invite you to join us in commemorating the 42nd Year Anniversary King Celebration. Together, let us honor Dr. King’s legacy, celebrate our shared achievements, and renew our commitment to the pursuit of justice and equality for all. With sincere appreciation and hope,

Keeping the dream alive,

The Honorable Rodney J. Long
